People often ask for a website when they need an application, or the reverse. The difference decides the budget, the team and the timeline.
The core difference
A website mainly publishes information to visitors. A web application lets users sign in, enter data and complete tasks, with the system enforcing rules along the way.
Many products are both: a public marketing site in front of an application behind a login.
Questions that settle it
If the answer to most of these is yes, you need an application.
- Do users need accounts?
- Do they create or change data?
- Do different people see different things?
- Does the system need to remember history and enforce rules?
Why it matters for cost
Applications need data modelling, permissions, testing of business rules and ongoing maintenance. A website, built well, needs less of each. Planning for the wrong one leads to a budget that does not fit.
